How
the African Goose received its name is unknown; for it has no connection to Africa.
The origin, however, is from the Asian Wild Goose and generations of selective
cross breeding heavy domestic *Anser anser
decedents; resulting in a combination of the kind. Like the Chinese goose, African
geese have the black bill sporting the knob, a graceful upright stance, and a
dark brown stripe running from the head down the back of the neck. Its greater
size, deeper honk, dewlap and lower abdomen are from the heavy breeds. This truly
is an impressive bird with mature weights up to 30 or more pounds in the ganders.
When raised with care and attention, the reward is a tame and gentle bird. *There
are at least 13 wild species within the genus Anser, one being the Swan goose
(Anser cygnoides) - an Asian wild goose which is the origin of the domestic Brown
Chinese Goose. Another is (Anser anser) - the Greylag Goose which is the origin
of the Toulouse, Embden, Buff, Pilgrim, Pomeranian, and so many of the other heavier
domestic stout billed broad horizontal bodied geese fanciers are keeping. Domestic
Anser cygnoides descendants can be bred to domestic descendants of Anser anser;
producing fertile offspring. From this point, as with all domestic creatures,
people have developed many shapes, sizes, and colors; for a variety of uses through
selective breeding. The massive African Geese are a product of this. The
difference between mature male and female African Geese
You can tell mostly by the sound of their honk. The gander (male) has a high hollow
(long double syllable) honk, resembling a tug boat. The goose (female) has a deeper
(short single or double syllable) honk. With African Geese, the gander is taller
and has a larger knob above his bill. The goose has a lower abdomen that nearly
drags the ground.
