Wenceslaus
was the first rooster we ever had. He was of mixed origin with feathered
shanks and sported a beautiful golden duckwing plumage. When we
took him home, we had a small flock of Rhode Island Red hens for
which he was most pleased to look after. Wenceslaus took care of
and survived many hens, always a gentleman, yet maintaining his
dominance among the added roosters on the farm.
As a free range bird, he has survived
two dog attacks and lost an eye in a cockfight over breeding rights
to some hens. Up until his death he remained a favorite of ours,
his gentle disposition and distinct crow is truly missed.
